CLAREN RUTH (ZOCH) DUNK, 73, longtime Brookshire resident, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2013, in Houston, Texas.

Ruth was born January 3, 1940, in Winchester, Texas. The daughter of Eldor and Clara (Mitschke) Zoch, she grew up in Winchester where she attended the Lutheran Parochial School through the eighth grade. She then attended La Grange High School.

Ruth married Robert Raymond Dunk on October 20, 1956, in Winchester. They lived in Huntsville for 2 1/2 years before moving to Aransas Pass. In 1963, they settled in Brookshire where both Ruth and Robert were employed at Royal ISD.

A devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, Ruth loved taking care of her family, and treasured the time she was able to spend with them, especially her grandchildren. She thought her oldest son, Mark, was crazy when he moved his family to California, then Colorado, but was thrilled when they returned home to Texas. She had an ongoing debate with her daughter-in-law, Linda with regard to whether starlings are "good" birds or "bad" birds. And she looked forward to her nightly phone visits with her daughter-in-law, Jessica, especially when Robert was ill. Ruth was an excellent cook, and made the world's best chicken spaghetti and German potato salad. She enjoyed gardening and growing her own vegetables, and was particularly knowledgeable about when and how to plant any plant. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Pattison where she served on the Altar Guild. Ruth also looked forward to trips to the hill country. She loved animals and was especially devoted to her faithful companion, Molly. Ruth was fluent in German and used many German phrases and expressions in her everyday conversations.

During the past couple of years, especially during the time that Robert battled cancer, whenever the family got together in Brookshire, Ruth would ask, "What are we going to eat?" Invariably the unanimous response was, "Orlando's Pizza!" Ruth was always amazed at how much pizza her family could devour in a sitting. Robert preceded Ruth in death on January 7, 2013, after more than 56 years of marriage.

Ruth is survived by her SONS: Mark Dunk and his wife, Linda, of Manvel, and Paul Dunk and his wife, Jessica, of Katy; GRANDCHILDREN: Robert Nicholas Dunk of San Marcos, Adriana Dunk of College Station, and Tanner Dunk and Rebecca Dunk, both of Katy; and BROTHER: Elmo Zoch and his wife, Angeline, of Winchester. Ruth also leaves behind her BROTHERS-IN-LAW: Belmont Dunk, Delbert Dunk and Monroe Dunk, all of La Grange; SISTER-IN-LAW: Iola Perkins and her husband, Lee, of Winchester; and numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert. She will be greatly missed.
