JoAnn L. Herndon, 69, of Columbia passed away Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at her home.
Friends will be received from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at The Second Missionary Baptist Church, where funeral services will follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Clyde Ruffin officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Cemetery.

She was born Sept. 22, 1943, in Columbia, the daughter of Ruth (Herndon) Gardner and John Anderson.
JoAnn was a graduate of Hickman High School in Columbia and Lincoln University in Jefferson City. She went on to earn her Masters Degree in Teaching/Education in Los Angeles, Calif.
JoAnn was a school teacher in the Kansas City area and then the state of California. She was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta. She was a member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church and a grandparent at Trinity Lutheran Church. JoAnn enjoyed helping and teaching children and spending time with her family.
JoAnn is survived by her mother, Ruth Gardner of Columbia; two brothers, Frank Gardner (wife Lillie) of Columbia and Terry Gardner (wife Renee) of Ft. Worth, Texas; three sisters, Carolyn Rutawisire (husband Mustafa) of Columbia, Vanessa Anderson of Columbia and Kathleen Anderson of Seattle, Wash.; Kathleen's daughter, Analisa Mitchell; 20 nieces and nephews; 30 great-nieces and nephews; 23 great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Anderson; and one sister, Ada Nevels.
