Charles R. Douglass, 86, of New Portland Road died Sunday at a Westbrook hospital.

Born in Illion, N.Y., he was a son of Adelbert C. Douglass, M.D., and Frances Ellis Douglass, and graduated from Cornell University. During World War II, Mr. Douglass served in New Jersey and in Brazil with the Navy.

Mr. Douglass was a hospital and hotel administrator. He had worked for Dobbs House in New Jersey, Pan American World Airways in Brazil, Lenox Hill Hospital in New York and Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. At the time of his retirement, he was executive director of D.C. General Hospital.

For many years, he had been active in the Sacarappa Dog Obedience Club in the Portland area.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Vera Goff Douglass of Gorham; a son, Charles I. Mallory of Annandale, Va.; two daughters, Dawn M. Berke of Portland and Clythie M. Hinnant of Mt. Vernon, Va.; a sister, Jean Horstman of Fairfax, Va.; and eight grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Gray Village Cemetery with the Rev. Philip Shearman officiating. Arrangements are by Dolby and Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State St., Gorham.
