Thank you.
"We believe Thomas Courtney came to Brushcreek Township, Highland County Ohio sometime in the early 1800's from Monongalia Virginia-probably 1813 and farmed here. Thomas and his family were Methodists. We believe his father Thomas came over from Ireland probably with his parents. My Great Grandfather John D. Courtney b.1896 always used to say that they were Scotch Irish and that they came over because of the potato famine."
"My family is descended from Thomas Courtney's son Levi. Levi's son Simon is my Great-Great grandfather. My Great Grandfather was Simons son John Denver Courtney born 1896-I wonder if my Great Great grandfather John Denver was named after Levi's brother and Simons uncle John D who died just a year earlier in 1895? Anyway John Denver b.1896 had 4 daughters including my Grandmother Ada Marie Courtney. Levi Courtney's family stayed in the Ohio area-not too terribly far from the Courtney origins of Highland and Adams Counties. Most of the other children of Thomas Jr and Polly traveled in covered wagons to Iowa and eventually Missouri sometime after Thomas died."
"According to the Cemetery inscriptions book of Highland County the family farm of 163 and a half acres in Brushcreek Township was sold in August 1860 and 1 sixteenth of an acre of the land was set aside for the "use and benefit of a burying ground." There were 2 gravestones on the plot at the time- I assume one was where Polly's husband Thomas was buried. According to the record the cemetery is now obliterated. The farm on which it was located was owned in 1971 by Ralph J. Yochum. Polly died in 1879 in nearby Hillsboro OH. I wish I knew why much of the family moved to Iowa- maybe more fertile farmland?"
