Gilbert Fanning Bought a cemetery plot from Capt. Thomas Robinson in 1785 (Robinson Burying Ground, Stonington, CT ) HIS father, Captain James Fanning served under Great Britain when that Government was at war with France.James m. Hannah SMITH of Smithtown and had five sons & four daughters; i.e. Phineas, Thomas, Gilbert & Edmund, James, Catherine, Bethia, Sally & Nancy. James Fanning was a witness to his father-in-law's will - that of Richard Smith in 1718.
