ARMY PILOT'S FUNERAL HELD IN EMPORIA
Lt. Donaldson P. Tillar III was buried Saturday, next to his grandfather in the Emporia Cemetery.
Tillar, an Army helicopter pilot, died when he was shot down over Iraq on Feb. 27, the last day of Operation Desert Storm.
First Presbyterian Church was packed for Tillar's funeral. When the scene shifted to the Tillar family plot in the cemetery, more than 100 people were waiting for the graveside service. Police estimate that more than 300 people attended the final portion of the ceremony, which included full military honors.
After a 21-gun salute and taps, American flags were presented to Tillar's two sisters. The flag that draped his casket was folded and presented to his mother.
Tillar was a 1988 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He followed his father, a career officer, into the Army. Though the family never lived in Emporia, Tillar visited relatives here often and considered this his true home. Tillar's great-great-grandfather, Benjamin Donaldson Tillar, founded Emporia in 1887.
