8/23/2021 UPDATE:
After finding passports for both John Hearn and his wife Mary for September 1918, we learn John had been in Costa Rica 3 months working on a deal for the US government to purchase nuts which were used to make carbon filters for gas masks needed in the then current war against Germany. Mary's passport says she would stay there until the "end of war" and it did end one month later in Nov 1918 (WW 1 dates: 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918). Sadly, the following January 1919, pregnant Mary died of the flu, while in the US.

JOHN O. HEARN by Mary E Regan (written January 22, 1962 and notarized by William J Regan)
My bother lived in the city of Detroit until the year of 1907 when he was appointed by his corporation to take care of their investment in Canada, returning here (Detroit, MI) for a short period in 1911 on some business matters, then left in 1912 again for Canada, returning with his family in the middle of the year of 1914, staying here. He never joined the arm forces of the Canadian Forces or ever worked for the Canadian Government. To the best of my knowledge I believe the port of entry that he came back through was at Windsor, Canada, along with his family, in the middle of the year of 1914. As to his citizenship, I wish to state that my brother was very active in politics before leaving here in 1907 and on his return in the state of Michigan. In fact, he was employed by the state of Michigan as a Buyer of Real Estate for the program setup by the state of Michigan for the purchase of future state parks. My brother died on February 22, 1952.
