Mrs. Barbara Schantz,wife of John Schantz, died very suddenly this morning of rheumatism of the heart, at her home,8 East Third St.,being found dead in her bed when her daughter Rose went into her room to call her for breakfast. Mrs. Schantz was in ill health of late with rheumatism and heart trouble. She was awake when Mr. Schantz got up at 5:30,asking him the time. He told her and then asked how she was feeling. She replied that she was very well,much better than she had been,and Mr.Schantz went downstairs to his place of business to open up. It has been Mrs. Schantz's custom to remain in bed until breakfast was nearly ready.When her daughter,Rose,called and she did not respond,the discovery was made that she was dead.
Mrs. Schantz had been a resident of Mansfield for 40 years,and has a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. She was born in Johnsville,Morrow county July 23, 1836. Her maiden name was Barbara Buckingham,daughter of Mr.& Mrs. Wesley Buckingham. She was united in marriage with John Shantz Nov. 24, 1856 in this city.
Miss Alice Schantz,a daughter has been spending her vacation in Atlantic City.She was notified of the death of her mother and is expected home tomorrow. Mrs. Schantz leaves two sons, A.A & Charles C Schantz, and three daughters, Misses Rose and Alice Schantz and Mrs. J.B. Clugson. Mrs. Schantz was a member of the St.Luke's Lutheran Church. Arrangements will be completed upon the return of her daughter.

The funeral of the late Mrs. Barbara A Schantz, wife of John Schantz, who died at her home on East Third St., were held at 10 o'clock Monday morning, the Rev. O.D. Baltzley, pastor of St.Luke's Church, of which Mrs. Schantz was a member, officiating.
The pall bearers were J.A. Rigby, A.C.Cummins, Wesley Foltz, John L Dehn, A.J. Eggert, John Van Atta, A.A. Schantz of the D&C Navigation Co.,and C.C. Schantz of C.& B. Line, sons of the deceased, arrived here Sunday for the funeral. The floral tributes were very numerous and beautiful,a number of them being sent from Detroit and elsewhere. Among those who sent floral tributes were Mayor Mayberry of Detroit, George W Fowle,Police Commissioner of Detroit, Swart Brothers, proprietors of the Cadillac Hotel of Detroit, M.Graves, proprietor of the Cadillac Hotel of New York, officers of the Detroit and Cleveland Steam Navigation Company of Detroit,the Independent Club of Detroit, of which A.A. Schantz is president, the Elks of Detroit, the C.& B. Navigation Co,of which C.C. Schantz is an employee. The Rathbone Sisters,of this city, of which Mrs. Schantz was a member,presented a handsome floral tribute.
The Detroit Free Press of Saturday published an article in regard to the death of the mother of A.A. Schantz,and also an excellent likeness of the deceased.
