Born March 13, 1910, in St. Paul, N.C., he was a son of the late Jesse Washington Brown and the late Sallie Smith Brown. Mr. Brown was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Lions Club since February 1948. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He founded the local ECB Construction Co. in 1949, which is now owned and operated by son Ernest C. Brown Jr. He was an avid and talented gardener, producing an abundant garden each year that included okra and tomatoes. Mr. Brown also spent much of his time building and giving away bluebird houses in hopes of protecting the endangered species. He was an avid fisherman.
Surviving are a son, Ernest C. Brown Jr. of Sumter; three daughters, Joyce B. Edenfield and Sandra B. Carter, both of Sumter, and Linda B. Gulledge of Chapin; a brother, Loyd J. Brown of Sumter; a sister, Ethel B. Smith of Shreveport, La.; 10 grandchildren, Jim Edenfield, Elaine Ogden, Jay Carter, Pat Carter, Chris Carter, Greg Brown, Matthew Brown, Katherine Brown, Danny Gulledge and Leigh Gulledge; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Walt Kendall officiating.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
