Astrid & Ole became parents of ten children. Then on May 23, 1878 tragedy struck. A major tornado passed through Iowa and Dane County Wisconsin. The Ole Swenson home was directly in its path and was completely demolished. Ole was found with a rail driven through his body and Astrid was found dead about six rods from the house with her one year old son in her arms. Lewis was born in April 1877, and was not injured. Ole and Astrid were buried at Perry Lutheran Cemetery on June 10, 1878.

Astrid and her family came to America on the ship May 17, 1849, arriving in New York on June 26, 1849.
Astrid married Ole Svensen on October 18, 1853. She was the daughter of Juul Knudsen Svanheld and Marit Juulsdatter Hoverud
