Services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, where a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Burial will be in the Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the church.
Mercedes was born Aug. 31, 1914, in Pocahontas, Iowa, the daughter of Phillip H. and Margaret Stelpflug Holder. She married Robert H. Smith in May of 1939, in Lancaster, Mo. He preceded his wife in death on March 31, 1991.
Mrs. Smith worked as the office manger for Blackhawk Township for 20 years, retiring in 1976. Early, she and her husband were the owner/operators of the Milan Dairy Queen. Mrs. Smith had also worked as a hairdresser.
Mercedes' memberships included St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Blue Cross Missions and The Willobees. Her hobbies included playing cards, bingo, gardening and crocheting. She enjoyed and loved her family.
Survivors include her daughters and spouses, Barbara and Ron Foster, Lynn Center, Patricia and Larry Weston, Andalusia; grandsons and spouses, Vaughn and Denise Foster, Scot Weston, Rodney and Samantha Weston; great-grandchildren, Sarah, Sean and Rylee; great-great-grandson, Wyatt; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and a sister.
