Reverend Earl L. Fort, 92, a resident of the Cornelius community, died Thursday morning, August 8, 2013 at the Portland VA Medical Center.
REVEREND EARL L. FORT was born on April 3, 1921, in Caseyville, Kentucky, the son of the late William and Irma (Wright) Fort. He was raised and received his education in Greeley, Colorado having been a graduate with the Greeley High School Class of 1939. He was a Veteran of World War II, having joined the United States Army on January 13, 1942 in Denver, Colorado. The recipient of two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star, Earl served for three years in the 387th Infantry Regiment, until receiving his honorable discharge on October 15, 1945 in Camp Carson, Colorado at the rank of Private First Class.
Earl was united in marriage to Elvira M. "Sandy" Fort on August 24, 1945 in Topeka, Kansas.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Wayland Baptist University, Plainview Texas in 1951 and a Bachelor of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas, in 1955.
They made their home in Canyon, Texas from 1962 – 1972 at which time they moved to Oregon, settling in Portland. After four years in Portland, they moved to the Cornelius community, where he has resided since.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Elvira S. (Sandy) Fort on December 11, 2007, after celebrating over sixty two years of marriage together.
Earl served as a Minster for Montgomery Baptist, Montgomery, Texas; Temple Baptist Church, Beaumont, Texas; Iola Missionary Baptist Church, Iola, Texas; Rose City Baptist Church, in Portland, Oregon; Central Baptist Church in Forest Grove, Oregon.
He most recently was a member of the The Crossing Baptist Church in Forest Grove, Oregon.
Among his special interests, he enjoyed woodworking and gardening.
Earl is also preceded in death by his sister, Helen Benally of Aurora, Colorado.
Survivors include his three sons and daughter-in-law, David and Dawn Fort, of Hillsboro, Oregon; Daniel Fort, and James Fort, of Cornelius, Oregon. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Joshua Fort, Evan Fort, James Fort, Tony Fort, D.J. Fort, and Tasia Fort.
