After a long battle with cancer, Rebecca Jane McCay Derringer Leonard passed away peacefully on August 6, 2009. She was 84 years old.
Known to hundreds of Poway Unified School District children as Mrs. Derringer, or simply "Mrs. D", Becky taught 1st - 2nd grades at Pomerado Elementary to cap out a long career with the District, including Poway High School.
Marrying Walter Derringer in 1942, Becky started teaching in 1974 after raising her children, Asa Ray Derringer, Mary Derringer Lawson and Denise (Denie) Derringer Newbarr. Walter Derringer preceded her in death in 1988.
After moving to Carpintaria, she met and married Louis Leonard 4 years later. Louis remarked that he felt very fortunate to have been able to spend 17 wonderful years with Becky.
Becky is survived by her husband, Louis; her three children and their spouses, Edna Derringer, David Lawson and David Newbarr; brother, George McCay of Sacramento; sister, Delcina Ann Cassella of Apple Valley. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Terra McCrory, Shawna Dew, Daniel Derringer and Sarah Lawson; and three great-grandchildren, Michael McCrory III, Emily G. McCrory and Jordyn J. Dew.
Becky, you are sorely missed by all those of us named above, your many friends and classroom aides and by all the Room 5 Superstars of Pomerado Elementary School!
The viewing is at Greenwood Cemetery Friday, August 14, from 12-2pm, followed by interment.
