Dorothea Mueller Hempeler

Funeral services were conducted at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, Iowa, for Mrs. Dorothea (J.A.) Hempeler on Saturday afternoon, June 18, at 2:00 o’clock. Rev. J. Pannkuk, pastor of the church, officiated at the church and Rev. G. Bunge, St. Donatus, at the cemetery. Messers. Lloyd Brownson, Lloyd, Louis, Oliver and Velmah Mueller, and Julius Pahlas, nephews of the deceased acted as pallbearers, and the church choir sang.

Mrs. Hempeler was born as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Mueller on December 3, 1866, near Garnavillo and spent almost all of her life in and near that town. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. On May 18, 1897, she was married to Mr. J. A. Hempeler, a contractor. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Mrs. Louise Bunge of St. Donatus, and August and Louis of Garnavillo.

The couple was permitted to observe its golden wedding anniversary on May 18, 1947. Mr. Hempeler died February 1, 1948 and Mrs. Hempeler made her home after that with her son, August, and her daughter, Mrs. G. Bunge, at whose home she passed away on June 15,1955 after a long illness.

In addition to the children mentioned above, Mrs. Hempeler is survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her three brothers; John, Henry and Louis, and three sisters; Mesd. Ann Pahlas, Mary Tuecke, and Mathilda Turner, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Hempeler was a charter member of St. Peter Church and its Ladies’ Aid Society and always took an active interest in all its causes as well as those of the church at large. Relatives and friends loved and respected her for her devotion, sympathy, and helpfulness, and will cherish her memory.
