He enlisted 7 Aug 1861 in Co. C, 9th Kansas Cavalry. He mustered out 21 November 1864 at Leavenworth, Kansas. He lived in Ottumwa Township, Coffey County, Kansas with his wife Nancy E. Family trees on Ancestry.com show that he married Nancy Elizabeth Despain in 1865 in Coffey County. She was a daughter of James Simpson Despain and his first wife, Indiana. Atwood & Nancy were the parents of Henrietta, b. ca. 1870, and Ayero, a son age 7 months in 1875. Nancy E. was listed as the wife of Henry Larmey in 1885.
There are Civil War records showing Atwood's service for over three years in the 9th Kansas Cavalry. Also attached is a record of his Civil War military headstone. He is listed in the Bowman Cemetery in a 1962 survey of veterans buried in Coffey County, Kansas. His death date is listed as February 19, 1882. He was listed as a Sergeant in Co C, 9th Kansas Cavalry.
