Speaker Dies at Political Session Here
Zeek Is Stricken During Address.
James H. Zeek, 2623 Logan ave., fell dead Thursday night as he spoke at a political meeting, sponsored by the Progressive League of Iowa, at the Polk courthouse.
Mr. Zeek, 61, had been called to the platform by William McNeeley, league president, to speak while the crowd awaited appearance of a city general election candidate.
A heart attack caused his death.
Widely known by his middle name, Harvey, Mr. Zeek has been identified for some time with a movement to secure the re-employment of jobless persons more than 40 years old.
Staggered
It was on this subject that Mr. Zeek was speaking Thursday night and he was preparing to distribute some pamphlets to the crowd with he suddenly staggered.
Gripping a railing, he gasped:
"I'm trying, but I can't go on. I can't . . ."
A police ambulance was summoned, but Mr. Zeek was dead when he arrived at Broadlawns General hospital, attendants said.
About 50 persons were in the courtroom when Mr. Zeek collapsed.
Mr. Zeek was at one time a fireman in the city streets department and was an unsuccessful candidate for county supervisor from Lee township in 1932. He was a candidate for the Des Moines school board last spring.
Lewis Arrived.
No candidates had arrived when Mr. Zeek collapsed, shortly after 8 p. m., but Dwight N. Lewis, mayoralty candidate, and Lee Keyser, parks superintendent, came before the ambulance had taken Mr. Zeek to the hospital.
Both left when the meeting was called off.
Mr. Zeek, a resident of Des Moines 60 years, has been a closing salesman for a Boston, Mass., firm and was at one time employed by the American Express Co. here.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Jessie Zeek, Mr. Zeek is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Florence Toomey, of Milwaukee, Wis., Mrs. Frances Batten, of Carlisle, Ia., and Mrs. Bonnie Herbold, of Des Moines. Two sisters, Mrs. George E. Ward, of Des Moines, and Mrs. A. L. Armstrong, of Eaton, Ohio, also survive.
Mrs. Zeek said her husband had complained recently of pains in his chest. The body was taken to the Carson Funeral home at Mitchellville, Ia.
Last fall Mr. Zeek accepted a challenge of Dr. Henry G. Hodges, Cincinnati, Ohio, forum leader, to debate the city manager plan at East High school.
