DOROTHY HUNTER

CEDAR RAPIDS - Dorothy Tvrdik Dannacher Hunter, 91 of Cedar Rapids, passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013. She was the beloved mother of Cathryn (Cate) Dannacher, Davenport; Diane Dannacher (Michael) Cummins and Sunny Dannacher Alexander; cherished grandmother of Michael Justin (Lila) Cummins, Jessica (Will) Muller, Joseph Ward Cummins and Shawnarah Kelly; dearest great-grandmother of Kassidy Muller, Mary Muller, Julia Muller and Ava Cummins, and Sassy too.

Dorothy was born in Belle Plaine, Iowa. She grew up in Guttenberg and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After graduating from McKinney High School in Cedar Rapids, she worked at Quaker Oats, and, during World War II, at Penick and Ford. She married Charles Eugene Dannacher of Davenport, where the couple later moved with their young family. Dorothy worked for many years at the Rock Island Arsenal as a graphic artist. After moving to California, she continued to work for the federal government until retiring in 1987, at which time she returned to live in Cedar Rapids.

Ms. Hunter was a member of the Red Hats, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the 39ers Club. She loved gardening, wildlife (especially bird watching) and cheering for the Chicago Cubs. Recently, she discovered that she was a descendant of the Pilgrim Elder William Brewster through her maternal grandmother. Her late husband Gene, all three brothers and all three brothers-in law served in World War II.

Also, surviving are nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Leora Tyrdik, and her brothers, Joseph, Bill and R.D.

Services are 9 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by Cedar Memorial Certified with Celebrant Juie Freese. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
