GREENSBORO — Viola Peeler Powell, 89, passed away on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at Blumenthal's Jewish Nursing and Rehab Center.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church. Ed Allred, Dr Ted Troutman, and Rev Hank Thompson will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Powell was born in Rowan County but had lived in Greensboro for the past 87 years. She worked in the family grocery business all her adult life. She and her husband retired together from Lawndale Bi-Rite Supermarket in 1980 where they both made many life-long friends.

Mrs. Powell loved her Lord, her church and her family. She was a member of Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church where she served her Lord faithfully until her illness. She was a member of the Laws Parks Sunday School Class, the XYZ Club, and Circle #7. The United Methodist Women honored her with both the Special and Honorary service pins. She served as Greeter coordinator for the 8:30 worship service for many years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Carrie Peeler, brothers Gilbert Peeler and Floyd Peeler, and the love of her life, her husband Summie Clee Powell.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Harold and Ronda Brown-Powell, daughter and son-in-law Cynthia and Jerry Wall, all of Greensboro, grandson and wife, Kevin and Krystal Powell of Columbus, N.C. and granddaughter and husband Marsha and Chris Duncan of Midlothian, Va., step-granddaughter Jessica Clonch, great-grandchildren Brianna, Brandon and Alex, special friend Pat Powell, and many loving nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank John and Eleanor Cranford whose help and support was invaluable to us during the past several years. A very special thanks goes to Georgia, Frenita, Cleveland, Kami, Skye, Ty, Shirlene, Lavon, Kevin, Hawa, Nia, Sylvia, Carol, Bonnie and many others at Blumenthal's for their loving care given to Mom over the past 10 months. Also to our Hospice team Tiffany, Donna and John whose support and love kept us going during this difficult time.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday at Forbis & Dick N. Elm St Chapel and other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to either Mount Pisgah UMC Cemetery Fund, 2600 Pisgah Church Road, Greensboro, N.C. 27455 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave. Greensboro, N.C. 27405.
