Obituary from The Times-News (Twin Falls, ID) - Thursday, August 22, 2013:

LaPreal (Adams) Wilcox Craig passed away in Roseville, Calif., on October 29, 2012.

LaPreal was born in Hagerman, Idaho in the "Sherman house" on Hagerman Avenue (aka Sherman Avenue), on December 18, 1920, to Ted and Estelle (Smith) Adams. Her mother was the older sister of the late O.S. "Bud" Smith of Hagerman.

When LaPreal was 11 years old her mother died, making it necessary for her to help her grandmother, Deborah Smith Sherman, raise her three younger sisters. As a young girl, LaPreal's writing of poetry was one of her passions and talents.

At 19, LaPreal married Winton Wilcox, boyfriend of her high school days in Seattle. [29 July 1940 at Joplin, Jasper, Missouri] Together they put him through medical school and raised four children. After the children were raised, they were divorced.

She later married Capt. William Craig, of the California Maritime Academy training ship and the U.S. Navy. [20 December 1984 at Carson City, Nevada]

LaPreal had a long and eventful life, living in many places, including Japan, Alaska, North Carolina, Washington, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and California. Since travel was her greatest joy, she also explored many countries and retired as administrator to the admiral at the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, CA.

She will be remembered as a thoughtful, generous, gracious lady.

In LaPreal's senior years, she was lovingly surrounded by her four children, Kimi Malach, Juanita Lyons, Winton Wilcox Jr. and Clifford Wilcox; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandsons, who all survive. She is also survived by four Smith cousins: Patsy Banning, Laurence Smith and Vernita (Ted) Talbott, all of Hagerman, and Myrle Leach, of Gooding.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; parents; three younger sisters, Joyce, Carole, and Verda (Vernon) Winegar; and by her aunt and uncle, Ethel and Bud Smith.

The Hagerman Valley created some of LaPreal's best lifetime memories. At her request, LaPreal was cremated so that half of her could go to sea through California's Golden Gate to continue her travels. Another part of her will rest in peace with her mother and grandmother.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 26, 2013 at the Hagerman Cemetery. The community is welcome to attend.
