Torstedlund - where Rode was born - is an old manor, which was first mentioned in 1390 and is located in Aarestrup Parish, Hornum District, Aalborg County, Skoerping Municipality.

After Rode had taken his preliminary examination Rode was an apprentice pharmacist in Køge in 1878-82 where he became cand.pham. in 1883. Then he was at the pharmacy in Randers from 1883-88. He worked in this profession until 1892, when he changed his career and was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts model school.

He painted landscapes with animals like horses, cows or geese. His naturalistic paintings were very popular but his greatest success he experienced at the Royal porcelain factory (also known as Royal Copenhagen) which he joined in 1895. Gotfred Rode helped to create the special Danish underglaze painting and he was one of the most experienced in the underglaze painting technique.

Rode and William Th. Fischer cooperated and helped to create the success that underglaze painting experienced around 1920 ... perhaps more appreciated abroad than here in Denmark.

Gotfred Rode was associated with the art academy as a teacher in 1902, and for years to come.

Rode was highly respected for his thoroughness, his cultured personality and his pedagogical insight.

Gotfred was married to Ingeborg Kolling (1865-1932). She was also an artist. Both are buried in Søndermark Kirkegård.

Biography
