Cora May Allen, 81, of Salina, died on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, from injuries sustained in a car accident. She was born Feb. 4, 1932, in Abilene to Paul and Viola May Shedd. (Arthur)
Deane Allen, 87, of Salina, died on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, from injuries sustained in the same accident. He was born Aug. 19, 1926, in White City to Alva Theodore and Myrtle Mercy Burt Allen.
Cora enjoyed community and church work and was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, various community circles and the Peacemakers class at First United Methodist Church. Her loving and compassionate nature was an example to aspire to. Cora enjoyed creating and sending personalized greeting cards, making regular visits to the home-bound and helping friends in need. She looked forward to chats with her weekly morning coffee group. Cora's passion for genealogy contributed to creating a lasting legacy and sense of place for her family. Inseparable from her best friend and partner, Deane, she was the matriarch of a family that learned to live, love and laugh through her example. From tea parties with grandchildren to always providing a motherly refuge for her sons and daughters, Cora embodied the essence of what it is to be a good daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Deane also was involved in a number of community, business and church organizations. Over the course of his life, he was involved in Masons, Rotary Club and Methodist Men. He also was active in county government, serving as a county commissioner for one term. Friend, confidante, businessman and father, Deane Allen knew no strangers. He enjoyed staying busy and could often be found on the seat of a tractor. He was known for helping others and was often sought out for his sage advice. He was a doer and a thinker. Like his loving wife, Deane particularly enjoyed the fellowship of his various coffee groups. Deane was the patriarch of a family that was taught to work, laugh and love. Among his pleasures were teaching his children and grandchildren to drive a tractor, sit on a horse and play pitch. He was firm, but fair, and always loving. Deane, together with the love his life, Cora, forged a rare, beautiful and bountiful life of friends and family. Individually and together, they touched many lives in deep and profound ways. Survivors include daughter Joyce Humbarger (Gary), of Kansas City; son Mike, of Salina; daughter Jody Flores (Larry), of St. Louis; son Dr. Milton Allen (Margaret), of Columbus, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Cora's survivors include one brother, Perry Shedd (Dorothy), of Alford, Fla., and one sister, Patricia Griffin (Ray), of Fort Collins, Colo. Cora was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Viola Shedd; brother, Paul Shedd Jr.; and sister, Loretta Barlow. Deane's survivors include Vernon (Lillian) Allen, of Hutchinson, and Gene (Lana) Allen, of White City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Myrtle Allen; brother, Wayne Allen; and sister, Evelyn Pritchard.
A memorial service celebrating the lives of Deane and Cora May Allen will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at First United Methodist Church in Salina. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the service.
