The relatives and friends of Susan Spencer are invited to attend her funeral service at 10 a.m. Saturday at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel. Interment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Mount Pleasant Chapel
Susan was born Sept. 12, 1939, in Madison, Wis., daughter of the late Dr. Walter Clark Beery and the late Ruth Prose Beery of Lima. She was raised in Lima, where she attended schools after World War II. She graduated from Shawnee High School and Averett Junior College, Danville, Va., and attended University of North Carolina Women's College, Greensboro, N.C. Susan was married to retired Army Col. James I. Spencer for nearly 52 years and was an active Army wife for 28 years, living across the United States, in the middle-east and France. She and her husband retired to Mount Pleasant, S.C., in 1989, where she lived since that time.
Mrs. Spencer worked for the Historic Charleston Foundation, Weight Watchers and was a docent at the Edmund Alston House, having served as a volunteer for over 20 years. She was also active with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League for over 20 years, serving on the board for much of that time, as well as the Al Hambra Garden Club as a member for many years.
She is survived by her husband, retired Army Col. James I. "Bud" Spencer, of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; two sons, James I. (Patricia) Spencer Jr., of Springfield, Va., and Charles Allan (Leann) Spencer, of Wheeling, W.Va.; four grandchildren, James III, Victoria, Bailey and Carolina; a sister, Gretchen Cleaves, of Centerville; two brothers, David Beery, of Chicago, and William Beery, of Lima; and a stepmother, Martha Beery, of Lima.
