Joe graduated from Elyria High School in 1941. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and attained the rank of SGT with the 81st Infantry Division, 322nd Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Company F. They fought in the Pacific Theater and were instrumental in liberating the Philippine Islands. He returned from the occupation of Japan in 1946.
Joseph married Donna Jean Lawrence, daughter of Reinhold and Virginia (Eady) Lawrence, on February 28, 1948 in Elyria. Donna passed away August 31, 1991, after 43 years of Christian marriage to one another.
Joe loved sports and participated in softball and bowling with a countless number of friends in the Elyria area. He labored for many years to provide for his family, before retiring from Harshaw Chemical in 1984.
Joseph was also preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Virginia; his brothers, Elton (Mary), Clarence (Teresa) and Bernard (Millie).
He is survived by his sister, Carrie (Richard Kuhns) of Grafton; sons, Terry and Joey (Carla) of Charlotte, Michigan; daughters, Carol (Megesy) and Linda (Tim Shetenhelm) of Charlotte, Michigan and Susan (Burgett) of Medina; 17 grandchildren, Brian (Lisa), Cory, Derek, Holly (Olivier), Jason, Joseph (Sarita), Michelle, Miscella (Pat), Rachel (Joe), Ryan, Scott, Shawn, Steve Jr. (Anna), Sunshine (Julian), Terry Jr. (Val) and William (Brandy); 22 great grandchildren, Alexandra, Anne, Atalita, Benjamin, Braedon, Brenna, Caleb, Chay, Connor, Cora, Debora, Emily, Emmaline, Grace, Herna'n, Jacob, Jadyn, Kaitlyn, Malik, Sol, Steve III and Victoria.
Funeral viewing and service will be held at Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria, Saturday, August 24, 2013 from 9 to 11 A.M. Burial services will follow immediately after at Brookdale Cemetery, where full military honors will be held. The Reverend Bret Myers will lead the services.
