Obituary -- Greenfield Recorder, Jan 5,2009:

Amy Mary (Irwin) Hollister, 86, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by family members.

She had recently undergone heart surgery there.

She was born in Brattleboro, Vt., and grew up in Vermont and Canada, where her father was an Anglican minister.

During World War II, she served in the Women's Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force in London, England, packing parachutes and as a pay accounts clerk.

After the war, she studied nursing at Oshawa General Hospital in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Visiting a family friend in Greenfield in 1947, she met John Hollister. They married in 1949 and made their home on Shearer Road in Colrain, where they raised six children. John Hollister died in 1991.

For many years she worked as a licensed practical nurse, then as a nurse's aid, at Franklin County Hospital, choosing the night shift in order not to miss her children's school and sports activities.

She was an avid Red Sox fan.

In later years, she enjoyed visits to her children in the U.S. and to relatives in Ireland and Canada. A communicant of St. James' Episcopal Church in Greenfield for nearly 60 years, she also participated in the Altar Guild, St. James' Ministry, the Church Welcome Committee and taught Sunday school. She was honored with the St. James' cross in 1995. Amy's many friends remember her for her optimistic good nature, generosity and joyful zest for life. Known as Anno to her grandchildren, she was the warm core of her extended family, which was her greatest joy and source of pride.

She leaves five daughters: Deborah and son-in-law, Scott Hatch, of Lopez Island, Wash.; Martha and son-in-law James Aschmann of Adams, N.Y.; Sarah Hollister of Colrain; Diana and son-in-law, Richard Braman of Whately, Mass.; and Nancy Hollister of East Hampton, N.Y.; a son, Kevin, and daughter-in-law, Lisa Hollister of Colrain; and Gary Longley of West Springfield who joined the family in 1973; six grandchildren: Mary Aschmann Crooker, James and Kathleen Aschmann, Harry, Eliza and John Hollister; and chosen grandson Patrick Crowningshield. She is survived by two brothers and three sisters: Sidney Irwin of Morrisburg, Ontario, Patten Irwin of Ladysmith, British Columbia, Margaret Hogarth of Toronto, Ontario, Helen Hall of White Lake, Ontario, all in Canada, and Constance Ayers of Rome, Ga.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and godchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 10, at 10 a.m. in St. James Church in Greenfield.

Burial will be in the spring at the Brick Cemetery in Colrain.

Calling hours at the Walker Funeral Home will be Friday, Jan. 9, from 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 8 Church St., P.O. Box 1511, Greenfield MA 01301.
