Benjamin F. Hartley married Harriet Elizabeth Gough, February 23, 1863 in Henry County, IN. Benjamin was the son of Elisha and Sarah (Emerson) Hartley, both natives of Virginia. Benjamin F. owned and farmed 194 acres. In 1867 he located on a farm in Harrison Township. Benjamin supported Democrats in politics. It was noted that Benjamin was a kind and loving father, and a devoted husband. He was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 74, Muncie. His remains lie in Beech Grove cemetery, Henry County, IN.
