Jo-An had a life long love of education. She attended Lake Erie College for Women and received her Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from the Road Island School of Design. She began her career teaching special education in New Jersey. Upon moving to Asheville later in life she taught at the Lucy S. Herring School. In an effort to further her own education she received her Masters Degree in Special Education from Western Carolina University. Teaching was a true calling for her. It brought her great joy and she dearly loved each and every one of her students. She retired on May 28, 1990 after 22 years of faithful service. She was a member of the North Carolina Association of Educators.
She is survived by her daughter, Jan Darcy Ward of Asheville; her son, Jon Bradford Ward and his wife, Kyra Beaver Ward of Old Fort and her granddaughter, Kyra Darcy Ward also of Old Fort.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00PM on Friday, February 27, 2015 in the chapel of Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue with the Reverend Gary Coffey officiating. Entombment will follow at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.
