Harriet M. (Hattie) Carpenter was born on August 5, 1883, to Sereno Ephriam Carpenter and Adeline (Getty) Carpenter. Some of her children's obituaries state that her middle name was Miriam; however, she listed her middle name as Marion on several of her kids' birth certificates. Hattie grew up first on a farm near Plymouth and later in Onion River, Wisconsin. Her parent's farm in Onion River was next to what is now the Waldo Village Park. They later lived at the south east corner of modern day Highway 57 and 28. Hattie taught school in Marathon County, Wisconsin and the Town of Wilson in Sheboygan County. On October 18, 1905 she married John Dee Parrish at her parent's home. The couple moved to Emmetsburg, Iowa, where John was already living and working as a foreman for the Shadbolt Lumber Company. In Emmetsburg, John would start an ice business. In Emmetsburg, they would have two kids, one dying as an infant. In 1908 the couple moved to a rural farm in Barron County, Wisconsin on section 26 in the Township of Cumberland. Her mom Adeline, a widow since 1907, moved in with her during this period. In Barron, Hattie had 5 kids, one of whom was an infant boy stillborn on December 18, 1916. In 1921 the couple would move to a farm near Plymouth, Wisconsin, on the east side of Highway 57 north of County road PP and in between the railroad tracks and what was then the interurban line. There they would have two more kids. John and Hattie were members of the Mulleton Methodist Church in Lyndon. Hattie would tragically die when a car hit her while walking along Highway 57. She was hit on Sunday October 30th and suffered from a skull fracture, a compound fracture of the left leg, and a possible fracture of the right leg. After several blood transfusions to try and save her life she passed away on Thursday November 3rd.
