The time clock of life for Sister O. Eileen (Dobbs) Garrett started August 10, 1922.
It stopped about 4:30p.m., August 15, 2013. She enjoyed a long and blessed life for ninety-one years and five days. She was born in Kiowa, Oklahoma and lived there for the first part of her life.
During her teenage years she went with her Mother and Sisters to a revival meeting of some sort. It was at that time she became a Christian by obeying the gospel plan as outlined in Acts 2:37-39. This was a life changing experience for her and she maintained that life style until the day of her death.
Some time after migrating to California and settling in the Lamont-Bakersfield area, she met the love of her life; The Reverend William H. Garrett. At that time he was a "Traveling Evangelist", preaching and singing while playing his guitar. As the "love bug" had bitten them both, the Reverend came off the Evangelistic Field, settled down in the area, and asked Eileen to be his wife. They were married on September 23, 1940. A while afterward they moved to Mojave, CA where he worked in the gold mines. There they met some families of the same "precious faith" and began to hold some Cottage Church Services. The Reverend had taken his wife Eileen to the hospital in Bakersfield, as they were expecting the arrival of their first born, Barbara Gail. She brought great joy into their lives.
As the gold mines began to close several of the families got together and migrated to Visalia, California, settling in the Goshen area.
Some of those that moved to Goshen along with the Garrett's were Brothers William Ashlock, Clarence Gilstrap, Glover Gilstrap, Jesse Gilstrap, and Roy Hopper and their families.
They all gathered together and started the Church in Goshen. As her husband was chosen Pastor, Eileen became a "Pastor's Wife." She served tremendously in this capacity for more than 38 years. During the early 1940's the Church Building in Goshen was erected. After resigning, the Church in Goshen and Evangelizing for about a year or so, Pastor and Sister Garrett in May of 1948 moved to Hanford to start a brand new Church. A tent was erected on Davis Street and Meetings were held there.
This was a time of great sacrifice for Eileen and her family. However, she never complained about her circumstances. Church Services were held on Davis Street until the congregation grew, property was purchased, and the tent moved to the new location. In the early 50's the "New Church Building" was started and once again great sacrifice was placed upon her and her family. In 1958 Pastor and Sister William Garrett's daughter Barbara, married Rev. Harvey C. Cantrell.
It was on a cold winter day in January 1959 that a darling little girl by name of Darlene Inez came into the lives of Pastor and Sister Garrett. What a bundle of joy she was. They once again had a little one in the home. Their Grandson Gaylen Dale Cantrell came bouncing into their lives on July 17, 1960. As Darlene and Gaylen grew, many times "Mom and Grandma" Garrett" took care of them.
As the years rolled by, she and the ladies of the Church learned to make and sell Peanut Brittle, Fudge, and Divinity candy. They became known as the "Candy Ladies" of Hanford. Selling candy helped pay off the mortgage and remodel of the church building.
After Rev. Garrett's lengthy time of illness their Son-in-law and daughter came to Pastor the Hanford Church. Sometime later he regained his health and she accompanied her husband as they traveled for a time as Evangelists.
They settled down in Brentwood, CA and became the Pastor there for about 6 or so years. It was in January 1983 that the Lord called the Rev. William H. Garrett, her husband of almost 47 years, home to his eternal reward.
She returned to Hanford to be closer to her family and as time marched on she welcomed her two Great-Grandsons into her life. Weston in March of 1987 and Landry in June 1991. Upon her return to Hanford she began to work as a secretary at the District Office of the Western District of the United Pentecostal Church International. She was to hold this position faithfully until the Office was moved from Hanford to Bakersfield in June 2006.
The last few years she has been in declining health. She moved from her home in the Del Arroyo Mobile Home Park to the Remington House. After a couple of years or so she was relocated to the Hanford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
