Company I Berdan 1st US Sharpshooters were one of the 100 Sharpshooters sent out on the second day at Gettysburg. The 100 included sharpshooter from 4 companies: 1st USSS Co's D, E, F and I. They were with the 3rd Main under fire. Cook's "Comrades of the Battlefield" award shows 308 days under fire. He was a corporal at the time of Gettysburg, and was promoted to first sergeant the next spring. He provided field notes to Hiram Berdan and Charles Stevens to help Mr. Stevens write the book "Berdans U.S. Sharpshooters".
