Funeral services for Rachel Tut Russell were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Thomas, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Russell, widow or Ernest Russell Sr., died Tuesday, Sept. 2, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Frank and Dora Capers Cherry Sr.

She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools. She was a life member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. In the community, she was a member of The Sons and Daughters of Moses Lodge No. 82.

Eight children at birth; one son, Robert Russell; siblings, Willie Big Boy Capers and Frank Cherry Jr., Louise Bunch Capers McElveen and Mildred King Workman, preceded her in death.

Survivors include five children, Charles MC Russell (Joyce), Betty Jean Russell Goodson, Ernest Russell Jr., Ernestine Russell Wingate (Melvin) and David Lee Russell (Diane) all of Darlington; four sisters and two brothers, Ethel Mae (Joe) Durant of Washington, D.C., Margaret Baby Gal Poole of the home, Frank Bo Harrison of Bishopville, Bernetha Snoot (George) Ervin Sr., Doretha Rotha Foster and Freddie Bobby (Loretta) Cherry, all of Darlington; 23 grandchildren; 15 great–grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
