Lem was the first of six children born to Charles Clark Bowen and Julia Maria Hard.

Lem married Grace Murray Woodbury May 10, 1881 in Rochester, NY where she was born. They had 4 children: Edgar Woodbury, b. Jan. 8, 1886. Julian Perry b. July 21, 1887(buried at Woodlawn, Detroit). Charles Clark, b. Jan. 14, 1891.Paul Murray, b. Dec. 23, 1892.

Paul, married Helen Hutton Blauvelt on May 7, 1917 in Christ Church in Detroit. They had twin girls, Josephine "Dodie" and Ann Murray, born July 4, 1921. Paul died in NYC in Dec. 1935 of a heart attack and his wife died one month later in Detroit. The orphaned daughters were raised by their Aunt Constance Stanton and her husband Ernest Stanton in their home in Grosse Ile, MI.

Lem was President of The Standard Accident Insurance Company in Detroit, founded in 1884, and a member of its Board of Directors. He was a founder and first president of Cadillac and Pres and Gen Manager of D.M. Ferry, Seed Co.
