COGBURN, John JOHN MAXWELL "JAKE" COGBURN JR. May 1, 1941 – October 14, 2008 John Maxwell (Jake) Cogburn, Jr., of Griffin, Georgia, died October 14, 2008, at Christian Ministries Hospice in Griffin. He was born May 1, 1941, in Marietta, Georgia, to John M. Cogburn, Sr., and Helen Pittman Cogburn, both of whom predecease him. He was educated in the public schools of Marietta and attended Emory University and University of Georgia before receiving his BBA in accounting from Georgia State College in 1963 and his J.D. from Emory University School of Law in 1968. He was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity and Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. He was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1968, serving on its Board of Governors from 1977 until 1995; Executive Committee from 1986 until 1990; as Chairman of the Fiduciary Law Section from 1993 until 1994; and as a Trustee of the Institute of Continuing Legal Education in Georgia from 2004 until 2008. He was a member of the American Bar Association, Spalding County Bar Association, Lawyers Club of Atlanta, Atlanta Estate Planning Council, and the Old Warhorse Lawyers Club. He was also a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and the Georgia Bar Foundation. In 2007, he was named a Georgia Super Lawyer in estate planning, probate and trust law.
He had resided in Griffin since 1969 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Griffin and the Forum Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Griffin Rotary Club and of the Executive Board of the Flint River Council, Boy Scouts of America, serving as its long-time pro bono legal counsel and received the Silver Beaver for his service to the Council. The Jake Cogburn Humanities Pavilion at the Gerald I. Lawhorn Scouting Base is named in his honor. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Nancy Smith Cogburn; daughter, Julia Ann Cogburn Burchfield and her husband, Charles and grandchildren, Katie, Sarah, and John ("Little Jake") of Gainesville, Georgia; son, John Maxwell Cogburn, III, and his wife, Rachel and granddaughter, Isabella, of Atlanta; sister, Ann Cogburn Thomas of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and brother-in-law, James T. Smith. III, and his wife, Connie, of Decatur, and six nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1400 Maple Drive, Griffin, at 2:00pm on Friday, October 17, 2008 with Kevin Lobello and Hubert Flanagan officiating. The family will receive visitors in the reception room of the Church from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday, October 16, 2008 and will receive family and out-of-town visitors one hour prior to the service in the parlor of the Church. The body was cremated and the remains placed in the Memorial Garden at the Church.
