COLLINS EDGAR WAYNE Age 92, died on Monday, May 6, 2013, at Woodside Place, Alzheimer's Care facility. Mr. Collins is survived by two sisters, Jamie Powers and Gladys Robertson; and two daughters, Kathy Yarnell and Virginia Dailey; he also leaves behind one granddaughter, Carrie Weaver; and two great-grandsons. Wayne is a veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, where he earned several medals, including the Distinguished Service Medal. Born and raised in Amelia, Virginia, the son of James Edgar Collins and Leila Myrtle (Vernon) Collins. Mr. Collins lived, after his retirement from 22 years in the Navy, in Arlington, Virginia and subsequently Silver Spring, Maryland with his wonderful wife of 50 years, Margaret Anna (Mielke) Collins. Living on a small farm during and through the Great Depression, he learned to work on all the farm equipment and as he used to say "fix anything with nothing". His success throughout his life can be directly attributed to his work ethic and his natural mechanical and repairing ability. He served all of his service during World War II at sea, mainly on small ships, destroyers and LSTs. His service extended from the east coast of the United States to being on the landing craft for the Marines on many of the invasions in the South Pacific. He learned to be a radio man and took on other tasks aboard each ship that he sailed on, from cook to mailman. He retired from the Navy as a Master Chief Radioman. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Presbyterian Senior Care, Woodside Place Alzheimer's facility or their Family Hospice and Palliative Care. A Memorial Service will be held for Wayne at Clarendon United Methodist Church, in Arlington, Virginia. Arrangements by H.P. BRANDT FUNERAL HOME, INC.
