The son of Patrick & Catherine Gibney, in 1860 he was a farmer living in New Bloomfield, Perry County, Pennsylvania, although he claimed he was a Harrisburg resident in 1864. He stood 5' 5" tall and had light hair and gray eyes. He never married.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Bloomfield, Perry County, August 25, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 31 as a private with Co. I, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865 at Alexandria, VA. His father was also a comrade in the 208th Pennsylvania.

He moved to Philadelphia in 1867 and remained there until 1898 when he entered the state soldiers' home in Erie County, his final place of residence. (courtesy Dennis Brandt)
