FARMINGTON, Conn. - Albert A. Achilli, 93, formerly of Skowhegan, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at the Gables of Farmington, Brookdale Senior Living Center. Albert was born in Bristol, Conn., on May 31, 1920, the son of the late Louis and Adelgiza (Bernini) Achilli. A longtime Bristol resident, he recently lived in Skowhegan before returning to Farmington.

An Army World War II veteran and a survivor of Iwo Jima, he was a member of St. Anthony's Church in Bristol, Franco American Club of Bristol, the Iwo Jima Survivors Association and Bristol Elks Lodge 1010. Al was retired from the Barnes Group.

He loved to walk several miles every day; loved to travel, especially to Maine; and was an accomplished bowler. Hot peppers, a glass of red wine and a dish of spaghetti and meatballs were some of his favorite foods. Al would never refuse lending a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He enjoyed life and socializing with his many friends and relatives.

He is survived by his daughter, Darlene Achilli, of Wethersfield; a sister, Ida Holbrook, who resides at the Pines in Bristol; and many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, IIa (Holt) Achilli; and five brothers: Mendes, Andrew, Angelo, Silvio and Ernest.
Burial, with military honors, will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. (Morning Sentinel 8/20/2013 & Funk Funeral Home)
