James Lee Austin, 77, of Tiffin, took his final bow Sunday afternoon, August 21, 2011 at Mercy Tiffin Hospital.

On July 28, 1934 in Cleveland, he was born to John and Genevieve (Clark) Austin. He married Martha Moore 51 years ago on October 1, 1960.

Survivors include his wife Marti; daughter, Lauren (John D.) Austin-Smith of Tiffin; son, J. Jonathan (Cynthia) Austin of Ashland, MA; brother, J. Benjamin Austin of Lewisburg, PA and 5 grandchildren, Taylor Bloom, Jasher, Jadon, Zion, and Gracyn Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Clark Austin.

Mr. Austin graduated from Shaw High School in 1952, graduated from Columbia University with a Master's degree in 1962 and continued his doctorate studies until 1969. He started his career at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts and moved to Tiffin in 1964 as Director of Theatre at Heidelberg College. He retired in 2001.

His acting and directing career spanned from his childhood at the Cleveland Playhouse through 37 years at Heidelberg College Theatre and included guest directing at Berea Summer Theatre, The Star Theatre in Upper Sandusky and the Ritz Theatre; these endeavors amount to well over 250 productions. In addition, he designed sets, costumes, lights and accompanied many of these productions. Jim was the creator of the Tiffin Children's Theatre which ran for 12 years. His playwriting consists of over 20 plays and musicals including 4 bi-lingual pieces for which he received Migration Education Title I Grants.

Jim and his wife, Marti, performed as the host and hostess at the Hayes Presidential Center's annual Christmas dinner for over a decade.

Mr. Austin spent six months in Greece as a visiting professor at Deree College, north of Athens.

He was a member of PHI Gamma Delta and Alpha PSI Omega and held various positions with the Ohio Theatre Alliance.

In addition to his countless contributions to the theatre, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

A memorial service will be Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 6:00 pm.at Trinity United Church of Christ, where he was a member, with Rev. Dr. Louis Dorsch and Rev. Dr. Paul Stark officiating.

Memories of James Lee Austin may be shared on Thursday, August 25, 2011 immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the memorial contributions may be made to The James Lee Austin Memorial Scholarship Fund at Heidelberg University.
