Lakewood Citizen, Friday April 20,1934:

"George Matthews, a member of the Lakewood Township Committee nearly thirty years ago, and a former road supervisor of the township, died at his home on Brook Road last Friday, at the age of eighty three. He was one of Lakewood's oldest residents and a member of one of the town's oldest families.
He was born not far from the home where he died, and his parents, David and Katherine Matthews were born in Greenville and resided there until their death nearly half a century ago.
Mr Matthews had suffered a paralytic stroke on Tuesday of last week from which he unable to recover, due to his advanced age.
For years, Mr Matthews conducted a grocery store at the corner of Ridge Avenue and Brook Road, retiring from active business in 1912. Prior to entering the grocery business Mr Matthews had been a landscape gardener. He was a member of the Junior O U A M and had been a life member of the Greenville Methodist Episcopal Church.
Surviving Mr Matthews are three daughters, Mrs Mable Kingsley, Mrs Jennie Woodfield and Mrs Sadie LaVance, and one son, George Matthews Jr.
Funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon from the late home and burial made in the Greenville Cemetery".
