A daughter of Thompson Sinclair of Scotland and Elizabeth Hossman of England, she was born and raised at Moorefield, Harrison Co., Ohio and married there on June 13, 1850 to Michael Hotz. She was the mother of twelve children. She and Michael farmed near Tippecanoe and after his death she lived with her daughter, Katherine Riddell, and her son, Clement, in Cleveland where she died of pneumonia.
