Robert Alexander Jones was the child of Susanna "Annie" E. Johnson and Stephen Jones. He, his sister Sarah Ann and his brother Benjamin lived in Evesham Township in Burlington County, New Jersey in 1850. His mother was widowed in the early 1850's and did not remarry until the onset of the Civil War in 1861, to Webster Wilson. His stepfather also served with the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
