Daniel Douglas Lewis was born on Easter Sunday in Leslie County, Kentucky on April 16, 1933. His mother would celebrate his birthday on Easter Sunday even if it fell in March.

He was a son of the late parents Arnold Lewis and Mary Rose Bowling Lewis of Hyden, Kentucky.

Doug served in the US Army in Germany for two years as an Army MP. As a young man, he worked at Ford Motor Company for a while after his military service and became a trainman on the railroad in 1956 when he became an employee of C & O Pere Marquette Railroad. He became involved in Labor Unions that year and retired on December 31, 1996 after decades of service to his Union Members as the General Chairman of The United Transportation Union.

At his retirement, Michigan State Senator George Hart (D) presented a special tribute: "we extend our gratitude to this dedicated professionals contribution for his excellence, integrity and courtesy."

Daniel Douglas Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold & Mary B. Lewis; three Brothers: Jack Hager Lewis 1928 KY-1964, George Wilgus Lewis 1925 KY - died 1970 who married Frances Bowling who passed away January 24, 2019, and Capt. Ralph Lewis (deceased 1989) - married Emma Mattingly.

Doug Lewis is survived by his Wife Shelby Jean Lewis and four children; Donald Lewis, Deanna Lewis, Roger Lewis and George (Joe) Wilgus Lewis; their wives, Pam Lewis, Denise Lewis and Jenny Lewis; six grand children; Daniel Lewis, William Dean Lewis, Sarah Elizabeth Lewis, Andrew Lewis, Joey Lewis and Seth Lewis, two Sisters: Pauline Lewis Morgan & husband Edgar Morgan (died Dec. 13, 2014) of Newport, NC and Ruth Lewis of Leslie County, KY.

He holds a forever place in our hearts.

He was laid to rest on June 7, 1999 in the Maple Grove Cemetery, in Westland, Mich. A marble headstone was laid in his memory in the Lewis family burial ground near his father, mother, brothers and kin in the Grassy Gap Cemetery, Hyden, KY.

Father - Arnold Jack Lewis was born in February 12, 1906, died in 1964. He married Mary Rose Bowling on 12 February 1925.

Mother - Mary Rose Bowling, born December 9, 1904, in Leslie, Kentucky. Her father, John E. Bowling, was 34 and her mother, Nancy Joseph, was 31. She married Arnold Jack Lewis on February 12, 1925. Together they were the parents of Ralph, Jack, Doug, Ruth and Pauline. Mary died on March 17, 1989 at the age of 85.
