Animation Story Artist and Voice Actor. He was a key creative figure behind some of the biggest cartoon hits in recent memory. Ranft shared an Academy Award nomination for the original screenplay of "Toy Story" (1995), the first computer-animated feature, and collaborated on the stories of "The Brave Little Toaster" (1987), "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" (1988), "The Rescuers Down Under" (1990), "Beauty and the Beast" (1991), "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993), "The Lion King" (1994), "James and the Giant Peach" (1996), "A Bug's Life" (1998), "Toy Story 2" (1999), "Fantasia/2000" (1999), and "Monsters, Inc." (2001). He also provided the voice of Heimlich the caterpillar in "A Bug's Life", Wheezy the Penguin in "Toy Story 2", and Jacques the French Fish in "Finding Nemo" (2003), and did additional voice work for "Monkeybone" (2001) and "The Incredibles" (2004). Ranft was born in Pasadena, California. He studied animation at CalArts and joined the Walt Disney Studio in 1980, where he gained a reputation as an outstanding storyboard artist. In animation a storyboard serves as a sort of visual screenplay, a layout of drawings which outlines the main action and narrative progression of a film. "I don't know if people really understand what I do", Ranft once said. "When I say I do story for animation, they say, 'Oh, you're a writer!' If I tell them I'm a kind of writer, but I draw, they get this puzzled look". In 1993 Ranft became head of the story department at Pixar Animation, though he continued to work on Disney features. He had recently branched out into producing. Ranft died at 45 in a car crash near Mendocino, California. At the time of his death he had several films in production. Pixar's John Lasseter said of him, "Joe had a great passion for telling stories, and he told them better than anyone".
