Charles Frederick GRANT died when his carriage overturned in an accident when he
hit a rut caused by the 1906 earthquake,
Abigail's brothers and brother-in-law helped her opening and running a boarding house in San Francisco.
During the earthquake, the Grant children were thrown from a window. Catherine Lavinia suffered a broken collar bone and one the boys suffered a broken leg. They stood on a hill and watched San Francisco burn.
