COKER Joel "Jake" Phillips, age 77, of Coker, died August 15, 2013, at Northport Medical Center. Services will be 3 p.m. today at Sunset Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Tindle officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Calvin and Ida Phillips; sisters, Clemmie Gillian and Mae Wilson; and brothers, Loyd, Elon, Manley and Lando Phillips.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Faye Parker Phillips; children, Kimberly Lee (Daryl) of Northport and Ken Phillips (Ashley) of Coker; sisters, Vida Skelton of Bankston and Melva Perry of Winfield; and granddaughters, Miranda Nicole Lee and Emma Abigail Phillips; and mother-in-law, Emma Parker.

He was born in Bankston, Ala., the youngest of nine children. He served in the United States Army and was a marksman. He worked hard to provide for his family, 25 years of which at BF Goodrich Michelin. He loved and was loved by his family, especially his two granddaughters.

Pallbearers will be Michael Hoggle, Steve Skelton, Chris Skelton, Tommy Robert Sullivan, Kenny Whitley, Billy Hoggle, Dwight Parker, and Richard Parker.

Honorary pallbearers are Festus and Deletha Lynn, Mozell Smith, Doug and Carla Lee, Bennie Phillips, Flossie Phillips, Jean Cannon and friends from the Mount Olive Church and community.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to National MS Society in honor of his niece Donna Hoggle.
