Gale Thomas Bartow, 80, Blue Springs, Mo., passed away Monday, July 12, 2004.

Gale Thomas Bartow was born Dec. 6, 1923, in Linn County, Mo., near Haseville, the son of the late Thomas Isaac and Almeda (Gooch) Bartow from Browning, Mo. Gale grew up in Browning with his siblings: Lola Rae Carter, Russell and Marjorie Bartow and Gene and Ruth Bartow. Gale served in the Army during World War II. He graduated with a B.S. and Master's degrees from Northeast Missouri Teacher's College in Kirksville and later received his Doctorate of Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Gale married Irene Barton Farrar on Dec. 25, 1946. Gale was a teacher/educator for 36 years, beginning in Memphis, Mo., followed by 33 years in which he served as Superintendent of Schools. These schools included Laclede, Braymer, Mark Twain, Fort Osage and Blue Springs School Districts. Gale retired from Blue Springs in 1986. During his career as superintendent, every bond and levy proposal passed successfully. He had great leadership skills and educators and citizens across the state and country recognized and admired these skills and vision by electing him president of the Missouri Association of School Administrators, the National organization ­ American Association of School Administrators and president of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association. He also was a past district governor of Rotary International and was an active Kansas City Royal Lancer. His achievements also included the Harry S. Truman Award, Outstanding Citizen of Blue Springs, a past president of the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce, and was instrumental in helping Blue Springs become the "City of Cooperation." Gale was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blue Springs. Gale always had a kind word and an encouraging outlook for everyone. One of his last comments to a friend was "It's all right to wear out, just don't rust out." He loved his family and friends dearly and will be missed by many.

His family included two sons, Tom Bartow and Richard Gale Bartow and wife, Nancy; grandchildren, Trent Bartow, Tonya Bartow Murray and husband, John, Richard T. Bartow and wife, Kara Marie, Kevin Bartow and Cara Bartow; and one great-grandson, Adam Richard Bartow.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Blue Springs. Interment will be at Blue Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the Performing Arts Center at Blue Springs High School. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Blue Springs, the Dr. Gale T. Bartow Scholarship Fund and/or the Missouri Association of School Administrators Building Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs.
