Lohde fled Germany during the Nazi regime, travelling to Austria and Czechoslovakia, and then to Great Britain, where he worked in German-language theater and also in cabaret in London. He made more than 35 film and television appearances in his career, beginning with an uncredited role in Fritz Lang's M (1931). His last performance was in a German-language production of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, in Berlin.
