James Carnegie served in the War of 1812, enlisted as a private, 76th Regiment (Tuttle's), New York Militia. His brother (probable), John Carnegie, was a musician, rank of Fifer, also in the War of 1812; James was born in Massachusetts and moved to Whitingham, Vermont around 1784. James was the son of Andrew and Lydia Carnegie and had 5 marriages to the following:

#1 Abigail Hosley, daughter of David Hosley and Abigail Severance, married 5 December 1805
#2 Elizabeth Sigourney, daughter of Anthony Sigourney, Jr., an American Revolution Patriot, and Ruth Chase, married 28 May 1814
#3 Phebe C Johnson, whose first husband was Horace Hitchcock, married (to James Carnegie) 13 September 1826
#4 Sally Evans, daughter of Urial Evans and Lucinda (nee Evans), married, 6 July 1828
#5 Eunice (nee Wilson) Edwards, b. August 22, 1797, Herkimer County, NY, married (to James Carnegie)10 August 1848. After James' passing, Eunice married her 3rd husband, Thomas Goodier. Eunice died July 23, 1869 in Herkimer County, NY.

James had 9 known children with his first two wives. The proven children with James and Abigail are Eliza (b. 1806 d. 1887), Sophia (b.1808 d. 1808), Andrew (b. 1809 d. 1828), Hiram (b. 1810 d. 1812) and Sophia Hannah (b.1813 d. 1847). The proven children with James and Elizabeth are Janette (b. 1816 d. 1895), her twin Mariette (b. 1816 d. 1874), Hiram (b. 1818 d. 1863), and Abigail Hosley (b. 1820 d. 1868).
