Veteran of the American Revolution. 2nd Lt. in Abel Spencer's Co, Col. Selden's Regt 1776. In Capt Wheeler's Co 1778. He participated and was wounded at Ft Griswold in 1781, where his son Thomas fell by his side. As a survivor of the battle, he was received by President Monroe in 1817.

Children: Thomas Avery, Youngs Avery, Hannah Avery Avery, and Silas Deane Avery (whose name was changed to Thomas).
