The death of Mrs. Emma J. Brown, widow of Edmund R. Brown, occurred Sunday morning at her home on East Main street in Winamac after several weeks illness. She lacked less than a month of reaching her eighty-fifth milestone, and had been a resident of Pulaski county during the greater part of her life. A daughter of pioneer residents of Indian Creek township, William and Elizabeth March, she was born March 30, 1861, on a farm south of Pulaski that is still in the March family. Her marriage to Mr. Brown took place in March of 1878. He was in the mercantile business in Winamac from about that time until 1886, when they moved to Monticello. After some years there, and a brief residence at Akron, they returned to Winamac in 1917 when he engaged in the banking business here. Mr. Brown passed away in March of 1930. Survivors are a daughter, Miss Genevieve Brown of Indianapolis, and a brother William P. March of Winamac. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Brown Halleck of Billings, Mont., was killed in an airplane accident in 1941. His three children also survive. Mrs. Brown was one of the charter members of the Winamac Presbyterian church when it was organized in 1883, and for several recent years has served as one of its trustees and later as an elder. She was prominent as a member of the Embroidery club, and active in numerous community affairs. A large circle of friends held her in high esteem. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, conducted by the Rev. R. W. Crosby, with a personal tribute to Mrs. Brown by Harry McDowell. Burial was in the Winamac cemetery.
