Leland served his beloved country in the United States Army/Army National Guard. He entered the Army as an enlistee on January 9, 1952, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and saw combat as a rifleman with the 15th Infantry Division in Korea for a period of twelve months. His military career spanned 33 years with a couple of brief interruptions. He was a member of the American Legion, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.
Leland married Barbara Staley in 1953 and six children were born to this union. On May 31, 1980, Edith 'Edie' Sickels Doebbert became his bride and they remained devoted to one another until her death in 2004.
Lee loved traveling the United States. He had just left Montevideo on Friday on a new adventure to Washington, D.C. While camping in Howe, Indiana, he died peacefully in his sleep. He was 76 years old.
Left to cherish his memory are his six children; his brother, Ronald; and his sisters: Shirley and Linda.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Edie; his grandson, Calvin Foos; his brother, Larry; his sister, Neva; and the mother of his children, Barbara Staley. May his memory be blessed.
