BALITSKY, Esther Baila.

Survivor of the Holocaust, beloved daughter of Shia and Roiza Meckler who perished in the Holocaust, Esther was one of 5 siblings Miriam Shaindel, Sara Hinda, Moishe, and Yossi. She and her late brother Moishe survived the Holocaust together and came to Canada where they built a successful business. Esther is the beloved wife of the late Favel (Phillip) Balitsky, kind and gentle mother and mother in law to Jerry and Tammy Balitsky and Roslyn and Ben Schultz, adoring grandmother to Tovit and Michael Granoff, Aylit and Ron Scharf, Atara and Elliot Fenner, Liora and Ari Tuchman, Amaris and Aidan Thompson, and Kiera Siegel. Until her last moments Esther enjoyed a pure and boundless love for her family and took special joy in her 12 great- grandchildren: Yaira, Avi, Rafi, Ilan, Ori, Elisheva, Hila, Bentzi, Akiva, Eden, Danelle, and Natalia. She was a loving sister in law and a caring aunt to all her nephews and nieces. Esther was born in Pilica, Poland in 1925 to a close-knit family that was highly respected by friends and business associates of all religions. Esther and her brother were sheltered through the unspeakable cruelties of the Holocaust by their father's Christian business partner. Esther met and married her husband in a displaced persons camp in Degendorf, Germany, and they came to Canada in 1948. Esther went to night school to study English and then founded a jewelry business which she initially ran from her home, and then later moved to Yonge street, where it became one of the first businesses in the history of that street to be closed on Shabbat. At various times she operated and headed a retail, wholesale and mail order business, and in all capacities she was admired and respected for her business acumen, integrity, honesty and peaceful nature. In her home life she instilled a sense of importance for education and religious observance which lives on in all her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. She was kind, gentle and focused on goodness throughout her life. She artfully balanced business and family with seeming ease. Her family would like to thank her devoted caregivers: Jenny Quebral, Julie Garcia, Tess Garcia, and Ulanda Blake. Her quality of life was enhanced and extended due to the unbelievable dedication and expertise of her medical team, which included: Dr. Tibor Juda, Dr. Marvin Sazant, Dr. Karl Skorecki, Dr. Harry Rakowski, Dr. Gary Lewis, Dr. Zane Cohen, Dr. Chris Feindel, Dr. Herbert Basian, Dr. Barry Rubin, and Dr. Isaac Bogoch and her beloved in-house supporters and health-care team, Tovit Schultz, Dr. Aylit Schultz, Dr. Atara Schultz, Dr. Liora Schultz, and Dr. Amaris Balitsky. May her soul be bound in eternal life and may her indomitable spirit inspire us all.
